Did you miss the opportunity to go to the 2006 NYS Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY? Here’s your chance to experience it all.
See what was going on at one of the largest fiber events in the country! Over 34,000 people at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds on Saturday alone. There were Spinners, Knitters, Crocheters and other crafters. Llamas, alpaca, goats, rabbits and other creatures. Wine tasting, cheese tasting, fried pickles(?) and other foods. Yarns of all colors and fibers and the Hudson Valley fall folliage to compete with.
There was so much going on that we’re going to have to split this into two episodes!
In this episode we met with Terry Kunst an owner of angora rabbits, Richard De Moss of Catalynje Buffalo Fiber who spins Buffalo fiber, and Donald Kading a sheep sheerer.
What am I wearing:
- Shrug made with Rowan Wool Cotton of my own design completed fall 1996. (really just a feather and fan rectangle with cuffs)
- Booga bag by Julie (mine was modified to be wider) made with Noro Big Kureyon and Reynold’s Lopi
Podsafe Music:
- Witch Hunt by the Ron Helman Jazz Ensemble
Were you there too? Leave a comment and tell us about what you saw..

Me either! I’ve not been to a knitty festival, either! I loved this cast, almost as good as being there !
Looking forward to the next one!
Do you have the pattern for your feather and fan shawl? I really like it.
I offer the pattern to the Feather and Fan Shrug to all of you
Measuring:
Using any weight yarn, swatch the Feather and Fan stitch to determine your stitches/inch. Measure your arms and across your back with your arms in front of you, wrist to wrist (mine was 60″). Multiply your stitch gauge times the measurement from wrist to wrist to determine your desired stitch width.
Main Body:
Cast on your desired width in a multiple of 18 stitches. Knit in Feather and Fan stitch for 30″ or desired length. Bind off very loosely, and block.
Cuff (2):
Using double pointed needles, at side. pick up one stitch per row, and work st st in the round and decrease 2 stitches every other row for 2 inches, then k2 p2 rib for 3 inches and bind off loosely. Work other side.

Cat, thanks alot for the pattern. Great Site
Finally I got to see at least a glimpse of what so many has blogged about and it sure looks fantastic I have never participated in anything close to the Sheep and wool festival. Makes me wan’t to fly to US next fall and walk there myself.
Thanks for sharing.
Loved watching the show and seeing the guy shear the sheep. Wonder how they clean the wool and get it ready to sell? Maybe you could visit someone doing that and make a podcast for us!
Thanks,
Tink
